Health and Safety

There are approximately 800 workplaces in North Shropshire at which the Council is responsible for enforcing health and safety at work standards.  Inspections are carried out in accordance with the North Shropshire District Council Health and Safety Enforcement Policy.

The Health and Safety unit within the Council carries out regular checks on offices, shops, warehouses, places used for leisure activities and other non-industrial premises.  (The Health and Safety Executive deal with factories and other industrial operations.)  This ensures that safe and healthy working conditions are provided for all employees, the self-employed and members of the public visiting these premises.

Health and Safety at Work - Investigation

Inspections on work related accidents are dealt with in the following way:

• Inspections of business premises such as offices, retail, warehouses, leisure activities and most of the service sector, to ensure conditions are satisfactory and safe.
• Investigation of accidents at work which involve either staff or the general public.
• Investigation of complaints relating to health and safety.
• We provide information to businesses and members of the public to increase general awareness of health and safety.
• We do not deal with agriculture, manufacturing, construction or food industries, these are dealt with by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
• Health and safety in the food premises industry is dealt with by our food team, except for in food manufacturing, and home food business, which are dealt with by the Health and Safety Executive.
• Council buildings, manufacturing and construction industries are also dealt with by the Health and Safety Executive.
• Health and Safety within the Council is dealt with by the Health and Safety Advisor, managers and staff also have responsibilities.
