Town Centres Health Check and Retail Assessment

This study will comprise a town centre vitality and viability health check of the four market towns in the district, followed by an assessment of the need for further main town centre uses and of the capacity to accommodate them up to 2026. It will underpin key decisions on managing town centre development through the forthcoming Local Development Framework (LDF) and will also inform the consideration of planning applications and regeneration projects. The work should:

  • review existing sources of information, including previous town centre studies for North Shropshire and recent retail studies of other Shropshire districts;
  • consult with local stakeholders including the wider public;
  • evaluate the retail trends and market pressures affecting the district;
  • advise on the hierarchy of the four towns, the function of each and the specific role they might best play in the future;
  • consider the strength of centres outside North Shropshire whose catchment areas overlap the district.

The study is due to be concluded in March 2008.
