What is the Good Neighbour Award all about?

We need your help.

The people of North Shropshire are really concerned about the amount of litter in the streets.  At North Shropshire District Council we have worked very hard to improve our street cleaning performance and the streets have become cleaner.

There is only so much that the District Council can do and so we are asking local businesses to help out.  If you agree to take a small number of steps to reduce the amount of litter connected with your business, the District Council will give you a good neighbourhood award.  You will get a certificate to display in your premises and a sticker to put in your window. 

What do you have to do?

It is free to take part in the award scheme but you will need to sign a formal agreement with us.

You will need to agree to:

• Clean around your premises at least twice a day (when you open and when you close)
• Keep all the waste produced by your business in secure containers (so it does not get blown about by the wind or attacked by animals)
• Report any problems in the local area with litter, dog fouling or chewing gum promptly to us
• Only provide carrier bags to customers who ask for them
• Sell long-life 'bags for life'
• Encourage your customers to re-use bags rather than taking carriers
• Provide a bin for your customers to use

There is an agreement to be signed and returned to us.

Will we check that you are keeping to the agreement?

Yes!

We will conduct random checks and we will investigate complaints from members of the public.  If we think that you are not keeping to your side of the agreement we will discuss this with you.  If you are unable to keep to the agreement we will withdraw the award, but for as long as you keep to the agreement you will be able to display your Good Neighbour Award.

Businesses who have signed up to the Good Neighbour Award
