Home Improvement Grants
North Shropshire District Council may be able to help you undertake repairs and improvements to your home if your situation meets our criteria and funding priorities.
House Renovation Grants may be available if your home is deemed unfit to live in and you, as owner/occupier, cannot afford to pay for essential repairs. Only the most serious defects qualify - such as the lack of a bath or an inside toilet or the presence of extensive dampness, for example - and the applicant's income is taken into account when determining whether Council assistance is appropriate. North Shropshire District Council has a policy in place to ensure these discretionary grants are fairly and properly awarded and comply with the Central Government scheme. This stipulates the conditions that must apply when grants are awarded.

The amount of grant will be decided by a test of financial resources (a means test), which will look at income, and capital of the disabled person and their spouse or partner.
What is the grant available for?

- Use the basic facilities within their home, including the kitchen, bathroom, lighting and heating facilities
- Improve access to and movement around their home
- Ensure the safety of a disabled person and those they live with
Common adaptations include widening doors, installing ramps, stair lifts and level access showers.
The Occupational Therapist will decide what adaptations are necessary and appropriate.
Are there any conditions?
Yes. The Council may recover any equipment provided under the grant if no longer required during a five-year period following completion of the works.
How do I apply?
You must be referred to or refer yourself to an Occupational Therapist or Social Care for an assessment of your needs.
