We also have specialised markets taking place, i.e. Farmers' Markets.
For those of you in need of some serious retail therapy, why not make a change from the normal malls and high streets and try something a little different. Believe it or not Shropshire, is not only renowned for having some of the most glorious countryside in the country with open views across valleys that seem to go on forever. It also has some of the best markets in England where you can buy everything you need from pickles, jams and preserves to hardware, clothing and stunning, original gifts. Over 25,000 people live in the areas surrounding the markets, many of whom regularly shop there.
The town of Wem, which has most often been referred to as the 'birthplace of the modern sweetpea' holds an indoor market every Thursday in the new Wem Town Hall. The town first started out as a saxon settlement and throughout the towns somewhat turbulent history, Wem still prides itself on it's traditional values, old fashioned hospitality, friendly service and relaxed pace of life.
The town's monthly Farmers' Market in Leek Street provides shoppers with the opportunity to buy local produce direct from the producer.
Any business that has flourished for over 750 years must be giving the people what they want. There has been a market at Market Drayton in the east of Shropshire since 1245 and this tradition continues on today with the street market and market hall that is run every Wednesday and the Market Hall is also open on Saturdays. Henry III granted a charter in November of that year which said that a market in the manor of Drayton should be run every week.
The bustling town of Whitchurch is another excellent example of fine markets that North Shropshire has to offer. The town has many fine buildings dating from Medieval, Tudor and Georgian times and the market is held every Friday in the historic town.
Ellesmere Indoor Market is held every Tuesday in the towns Market Hall set in Shropshire lakelands in the North West of the county surrounded by lakes, meres and canals, and provides a variety of locally produced goods and merchandise.
