Reducing crime and disorder in North Shropshire
Working in partnership
North Shropshire District Council is part of the North Shropshire Community Safety Partnership, a group of organisations working together to reduce crime and disorder across North Shropshire. The Partnership links the District and County Councils to West Mercia Police, Neighbourhood Watch, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and a whole host of other organisations.
A low crime area
North Shropshire has fewer crimes than almost any other part of the country. Crime is 30% lower now than it was in 2003. Working together across Shropshire a range of agencies have set up a service which allows you to see what crimes are happening where. This information can be found on CADDIE at caddie.shropshire.gov.uk
The partnership is currently running campaigns on:
keeping your bicycle safe and taking steps to secure sheds and out-buildings.
What we do
North Shropshire Community Safety Partnership has an action plan which all the partners have agreed to work towards. We are reviewing this action plan ready for the year starting in April 2008.
We change the way we deliver services to target particular types of crimes or areas with particular problems. We also give grants to other organisations to deliver projects that will reduce crime and disorder.
We receive funding from the Home Office through a county-wide mechanism called the Local Area Agreement. The District Council also provides funding directly to the Community Safety Partnership.
The Partnership meets every two months to review progress and to agree future actions.
Responding to local priorities
All of the partners in the Community Safety Partnership keep a close eye on the levels of crime and if there are any spikes we take action to warn people and to drive down those crimes.
We are currently concerned about an increase in thefts from sheds and outbuildings and have issued some information to raise awareness of how to tackle this crime.
We also take part in the PACT (Partners and Communities Together) process. These are often public meetings (sometimes surgeries or surveys are used instead) where local people identify their priorities for the local area. These issues are not always crime and disorder. We all undertake to do what we can to deal with the priorities and to report back on our progress. You can find out more about your local PACT priorities on the local policing section of the West Mercia Police web site.
