Equal Opportunities
Recruitment
Equality of opportunity is a core value at North Shropshire District Council and we are committed to making equality of opportunity a reality, both in the provision of services and in our role as a major employer.
We believe that everyone has a right to be treated fairly and with dignity and respect. All Members and Employees are responsible for implementing the policy. Implementation of monitoring, review of policy and delivery of training and guidance in relation to employment will be the responsibility of the Human Resources Manager.
We will seek to ensure, in all aspects of employment a culture of fair and equitable treatment, particularly in relation to applications for employment, training, promotion and career development, recruiting on merit using the Council's Corporate Guidance on Recruitment and Selection and providing a work environment that is free from harassment and discrimination.
The Council recognises that barriers to employment and career development can disadvantage specific groups, and that each group may require separate treatment through, for example specific positive action initiatives.
The Council will promote equality and awareness specifically in relation to disability, gender and race, and more generally in relation to age, sexual orientation, religion or belief. Part time workers will be treated no less favourably than full time workers. The Council will also seek to ensure equality of opportunity for ex-offenders.
Key information on relevant aspects of employment will be analysed from equality audits, assessments, monitoring, recruitment and workforce statistics, including all elements of the recruitment and selection process; job applications and existing employees; promotion and transfer; training; terms and conditions of employment; work life balance; harassment policies; grievance and disciplinary procedures; resignations; redundancies and dismissals.
Complaints of discrimination will be dealt with through the Council's grievance and disciplinary procedures and where it is felt necessary, the appropriate training will be afforded to individuals or groups across the Authority.
