Elections - Proxy Votes

Democracy

You may apply for a proxy application form if you are unable to go to your Polling Station on election day. A proxy is someone who will go to the polling station and vote with your authority on your behalf.

Your application does not have to be supported:

  • If you are registered blind or you are in receipt of the higher rate of mobility allowance you are eligible for a proxy vote.
  • If you are applying for a specific election due to temporary illness, work commitments, away on holiday or have not had time to re-register.

Your application does have to be supported:

  • If you have a long term illness or disability which makes it difficult for you to vote in person. Your application must be supported by a registered medical practitioner, a registered nurse or Christian science practitioner. If you are in a residential home or sheltered , the matron or warden may support your application.
  • If your job, or that of your spouse, takes you away from home for long periods at a time. Your application must be supported by your employer or your spouse's employer. If you are self-employed, then the support must be 18 or over, know you and not related to you.

The deadline for receipt of new proxy applications is 6 working days before an election, but 'emergency' proxy votes for reasons of physical incapacity can be made up to 5pm on the day of the poll.

Complete the application form if you wish to apply for a proxy.
