Open Space, Sport and Recreation Study

North Shropshire District Council appointed consultants PMP to undertake an audit and assessment of public Open Space in the towns and main villages of the District which was completed in January 2007. The study was undertaken in accordance with the requirements of Planning Policy Guidance Note 17 (Planning for Open Space, Sport and Recreation, July 2002) and its companion guide (September 2002). The aims of the study were:

  • to carry out a comprehensive assessment of current and future open space needs with a full assessment of existing open space in terms of quantity, quality and accessibility;
  • to develop robust provision standards that will underpin the Council's LDF policies for open space and inform future policy decisions for various types of open space;
  • to identify surpluses and deficiencies of open space provision;
  • to provide a robust evidence base for the justification of developer contributions towards open space provision;
  • to consider the local policy framework for protection of / allocation of new open space.
