Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit - overpayments
When we give you too much benefit, we call it an 'overpayment'. If we give you too much benefit, we will send you a letter. The letter will tell you:-
- why we gave you too much benefit
- how much the overpayment is
- if you have to pay back the amount and how
- how you can appeal if you think this is wrong
The Council has around 4,200 claimants of Benefit. The potential for overpayments of Benefit is therefore significant and the cost of these overpayments falls on Council Tax.
With this in mind, the policy reflects the Council's intention to prevent overpayments occurring. When they do occur it demonstrates a fair and transparent process of recovery that considers every case individually but is committed in its intention to maximise debt recovery as quickly as possible.
