Community Alarms

What is the Community Alarm System

The Community Alarm System enables you to summon help in an emergency, either by pushing a button on the alarm unit or by pressing a pendant that you keep with you.  It offers a reliable helpline and works through the normal telephone network.

The alarm incorporates a speech unit, so you can talk to the person on duty (without having to pick up the telephone handset) and explain your difficulty.  All alarm calls are connected to a Central Control at Milton Keynes.  There are trained operators on duty 24 hours a day 365 days a year and they will contact the appropriate service, or a friend or relative as quickly as possible.

A pendant is provided that you can carry around with you at all times or wear around your neck.  Simply pressing the button will activate the Community Alarm Unit, which then automatically dials the Central Control.

How it works

The alarm unit is fitted to your existing telephone.  If you have a telephone with a socket type connection then it is easy to install.  If your telephone does not have the modern type socket, or if you do not have a telephone line, British Telecom will have to install one before the alarm can be fitted.  Providing there is a telephone line and the right kind of socket, the unit can operate without a phone, using its auto answer facility and built-in loudspeaker.

Where does it call

All calls go to a Central Control at Milton Keynes Borough Council.  As part of the connection process they ask for the names and contact details of the persons you would want them to call in an emergency, for example doctors, relatives, a neighbour or friend.  Your contact details are stored confidentially at Milton Keynes.  It is important that these details are up to date.

How much does it cost

Owner-occupiers and private tenants will have the option of either buying or leasing a unit and will have to pay a small service charge.  Costs are reviewed annually.

If you do not have a telephone or have the wrong type of socket, you will also have to pay British Telecom's costs for installing a line and/or fitting the correct socket.

You will still have to pay your telephone bills for the line rental and any calls made in the usual way.

Who can apply

This service if for people who want re-assurance that help is on hand when needed.  It is available to anybody living in the North Shropshire District area, whether you are an owner-occupier or in private rented accommodation.  Priority will be given to older person who are living alone in isolated circumstances.  Persons with disabilities living on their own will also be given a high degree of priority.
