Electoral Boundaries
Boundary Committee Review of Shropshire
The Boundary Committee is considering what the electoral boundaries should be for the new Council for Shropshire. The Committee will try to ensure that every councilor represents approximately the same number of electors by 2012 while trying to reflect communities and provide for convenient and effective local government.
The Committee will be looking at the electoral arrangements for the Shropshire Council.
Town and Parish council boundaries will not be affected.
Currently the area of Shropshire County Council is divided into large areas or 'Divisions' to which County Councillors are elected and smaller areas or 'Wards' to which District Councillors are elected. The Shropshire Council wards will not necessarily be based on either of these sets of boundaries.
The Boundary Committee has now published its draft recommendations for the new electoral arrangements for Shropshire Council. These recommendations are now subject to a further period of consultation which concludes on 25 August 2008.
A copy of the Boundary Committee's report, supporting maps and summary report are available on the Boundary Committee for England's website where you can also submit your views on the draft recommendations.
North Shropshire District Council's initial view
North Shropshire District Council has already discussed these matters and agreed a proposal for discussion. We have considered the area currently served by North Shropshire District Council and looked at whether electoral boundaries for the new authority should bring together communities currently served by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough or Oswestry Borough Councils. We have used the current boundaries of Town and Parish Councils as "building blocks" for the new wards we are considering.
