What is Building Control?

Building Regulations

Building Regulations are about ensuring that buildings are properly constructed, provide a safe environment that is sustainable.  They are a set of national building standards administered by your local council and cover things like the suitability of building materials, energy conservation, health and safety and providing disabled access.  Guidance on meeting the required standard can be found in the Approved Documents to the Building Regulations.  Whilst these are the responsibility of the Department for Communities and Local Government they are now available on the Planning Portal website. They have nothing to do with quality control or the way the building looks.

North Shropshire District Council - Building Control

The service is headed by the Building Control Manager, having overall responsibility for administration of the service.  For building control purposes, the district is divided into two teams.

The main purpose of the service is to receive and check applications to build and to inspect work as it proceeds.

When work commences on site, different stages are inspected by the building control staff (e.g. foundations, damp proofing, structure, drains, fire protection and escape provisions in the event of a fire).  When satisfactory completion of the work is reached, a completion certificate is issued to the owner of the property.

The Building Control Service operates on a self-financing basis within its sphere of Building Regulation operations.
